My 2001 Chevy Cavalier left turn signal is blinking fast in front but it does not light up in back, changed the bulb and worked for just for a short time, now it is not. Someone said I would need to change the whole unit attached to the bulb in trunk. Try scrapping them clean, on both the bulb and socket. It would not hurt to test the bulb again to see if it is still good. You can also turn the signal on and with a tester see if you are getting current back there, if you use a light tester it will blink on and off. Just hook one end to ground and the other touch the terminal. sounds like you may have a short in that light.
take it to a mechanic and have them check the fuse for that light.
we have light fixtures in our house that will insist on blowing the bulb after only a month or so....it's the electrical connection, not the bulb itself.

The oils from your skin will cause it to break as soon as gets hot. Don't know if this applies to your situation now, but it could be useful in the future. I learned this after ruining a few bulbs (for my car).
